What is a 3D ultrasound?
3D ultrasound is a medical ultrasound technique, often used during pregnancy, providing three dimensional images of the fetus. Often these images are captured rapidly and animated to produce a "4D ultrasound".
There are several different scanning modes in medical and obstetric ultrasound. The standard common obstetric diagnostic mode is 2D scanning.[1] In 3D fetal scanning, however, instead of the sound waves being sent straight down and reflected back, they are sent at different angles. The returning echoes are processed by a sophisticated computer program resulting in a reconstructed three dimensional volume image of fetus's surface or internal organs, in much the same way as a CT scan machine constructs a CT scan image from multiple x-rays. 3D ultrasounds allow one to see width, height and depth of images in much the same way as 3D movies but no movement is shown. 4D ultrasounds involve the addition of movement by stringing together frames of 3D ultrasounds in quick succession.
3D ultrasound was first developed by Olaf von Ramm and Stephen Smith at Duke University in 1987.
What is the difference between 2D, 3D, and 4D ultrasounds?
2D ultrasounds work by directing ultrasound waves (ultrasonic sound waves) straight down on the area being examined. These waves are reflected back up and recorded, providing the viewer with a 2D, black and white picture of the fetus.
4D ultrasounds take 3D ultrasound images and adds the element of time to the process. The added element streams 3D images into a live action animated video of your baby.
What is the best time of my pregnancy to schedule my elective prenatal 3D/4D ultrasound?
Many women using elective services like the idea of chronicling their pregnancy and come in as early as 12 weeks, again at 18+ weeks for gender identification, and once again between 24 – 34 weeks when the best results for the 3D/4D ultrasound images can be obtained.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Almost all 3D/4D ultrasound centers require an appointment prior to your arrival.
Where do I go to get a 3D/4D ultrasound done?
We recommend you book an appointment with a facility in your area.
